The Google exec in charge of designing Search: ‘There’s always this internal debate about how much functionality should we add’

Google’s core business, its search engine, is well-known for being clean and simple. Type in what you want and Google will bring up the most relevant websites. That’s how it works.

But Google Search doesn’t just show websites in its results these days. Now it includes an increasing variety of content from websites and tweets to videos and images. The aim is ultimately to provide the user with the most relevant information in the most accessible way.

Hector Ouilhet, Google’s head of design for Search and Assistant, told Business Insider this week that accommodating all of these new types of content in Search requires some careful consideration.

“The whole goal is to try to organise information and deliver it to you,” he said during an interview at the Tech Open Air conference in Berlin. “That’s the problem we’re trying to solve. The design has to accommodate multiple people, multiple expectations, and multiple situations.

“When you’re looking for whatever answer you want, how do we give you the right answer in a way that you’re like ‘oh yeah, that thing?” said Ouillet, whose team is responsible for the user experience across all of Google’s platforms and products. Today that includes watches and cars, as well as smartphones and computers.

Sometimes the answer to a Google Search is very precise, because the user’s intention is very specific, Ouillet said. For example: “What is 25 Celsius in Fahrenheit?”. But other times the question is more ambiguous and there’s no obvious answer. For example: “How often should I change the tyres on my car?”

Ouillet said Google often shows results to harder, more ambiguous questions with multiple “blocks”, which can include a range of different content types. “As technology starts producing much more rich content, so video, images, they’re all coming into this stream of results. So some results are more simple, others are more thorough.”

Ouilhet admitted that Googlers don’t always agree on how best to present information to the billions of people that use Google’s search engine, stressing that he doesn’t want to make it feel cluttered.

“There’s always this internal debate about how much functionality should we add to something,” he said. “Ideally we try to keep it focused and simple.”

When asked if there are any similarities between the design for Search and the design for Google’s new offices in Mountain View and London, Ouilhet pointed to the fact that both are becoming “more open and more flexible.” He said they were also both becoming more “inclusive between people that belong to Google and people that don’t belong to Google.”

You would be forgiven for not knowing that Osea Island even existed. But just a couple of hours’ drive from central London, sat serenely on the Blackwater River, is Essex’s best kept secret.

Osea, an uninhabited private island frequented by celebrities and the fashion and music industry elite, sits across almost 400 acres of idyllic countryside and four miles of beach. It is accessible only via a winding tidal causeway, or helicopter.

And the good news is that any ordinary person can also stay there from just £355 a night.

The island has a variety of stunning period accommodation options ranging from the grand and imposing, to the quaint and cosy, which are all available to rent for the night, based on a two night minimum stay.

Night rates range from £355 – £490 for a one-bed, open-plan Sweetshop cottage, all the way up to £3,850 – £4,995 for the 10-bedroom Manor House. The prices given are for two nights, and are season dependent.

Osea’s oldest property dates back over 400 years. An original farm house, it’s characterised by narrow doorways, shrunken ceilings and creaking floorboards.

Unsurprisingly, Osea has become a magnet for the cool crew of the fashion world. Blogger and stylist Pandora Sykes celebrated her hen party there, while model and socialite Poppy Delevingne is also said to be a regular.

Its large open spaces have been home to a number of cool exclusive parties and festivals.

In June, DJs, artists and TV presenters gathered on the isle for a private Island Records event.

Athleisure brand Lululemon also took over the island in May.

And this weekend it opened its doors once again for the The Little Yellow Weekender, July 14-16.

The event promised guests a weekend of banquets, picnics, yoga classes, countryside walks, sundowners by the pool, topped off with a massive house party.

There’s a name for the tactic manipulative people use in relationships to make you feel like you’re going crazy

$

Have you ever been talking to someone, and their version of events seems totally and completely different to yours?

This happens a lot, largely because the human memory is imperfect. We all remember things a bit differently to each other.

However, in more severe circumstances, people toy with someone else’s memories to make them feel like they are going crazy. It’s called gaslighting.

Gaslighting is not when somebody has a different opinion to you. For example, you can’t accuse someone of it just because they vote for an opposing political party. It’s a severe manipulative tool people with dark triad personality traits use – but not exclusively – and it is seen a lot in abusive relationships.

It’s mainly used as a power tactic, to make the victim question their reality, and become more subservient. According to psychologist and therapist Perpetua Neo, it is when someone “screws with your sense of reality to manipulate you, causing you to distrust yourself and trust them instead.”

The term is coined from the 1944 film “Gaslight” where a man controls and tricks his wife into believing she is losing her mind – her things appear to go missing, she hears footsteps coming from the attic, and she sees the gaslights dim and brighten for seemingly no reason.

These tactics are on the more dramatic end of the scale, and in relationships the signs can be a lot more subtle. However, Neo lists things she and some of her clients went through, such as having emails and numbers deleted from phones, and being made to repeat things over and over while being backed into a corner.

Even so, in many cases, if you’re being gaslighted you probably won’t notice it’s happening to you.

You might think you are too strong of mind to let somebody have this effect on you – and hopefully you are right – but according to psychologist Stephanie Sarkis on a blog post in Psychology Today, gaslighting is often done so slowly, the victim doesn’t realise they’re being brainwashed.

It’s like the “frog in the saucepan” analogy: where the heat is turned up very slowly on the stove, so the frog never realises it’s starting to boil to death.

Everybody is different, and everyone has different experiences, but according to Neo, people who are controlling, abusive, and narcissistic often follow the same pattern. For this reason, there are several techniques that the people who tend to gaslight others follow.

Here are some of the signs to look out for.

Sign #1: Lies

A gaslighter’s main objective is to confuse you. Because of this, they don’t really care whether their lies are blatant and obvious. When they say something that is obviously untrue, they will still say it with a straight face.

Even if you have proof, they will often stick to their guns. This is all a tactic to keep you off-kilter. Eventually, they will attempt to make you believe that everything they say is the reality.

It will start off with something as simple as: “I didn’t say that.” But over time it will turn into something more disturbing, such as threatening to expose you as a liar or a fraud, when really you are neither of those things.

The more sure you are that they are wrong, and the more frustrated you get, the more they will persevere with their lies.

Sign #2: Isolation

Abusive people like to use the people around you as weapons. According to Sarkis, if you have children, a gaslighter will tell you that it was a mistake to have them. They will try and make you believe that you are worthless, and nothing else can compare to how important your relationship is.

They may say tell you your friend actually hates you, or your brother thinks you are useless. These are almost certainly lies, but when they are reinforcing your mind with the same stories over and over again, some of them may start to stick.

“Gaslighters are masters at manipulating and finding the people they know will stand by them no matter what – and they use these people against you,” Sarkis writes. “When the gaslighter uses this tactic it makes you feel like you don’t know who to trust or turn to – and that leads you right back to the gaslighter. And that’s exactly what they want: Isolation gives them more control.”

gaslight

Foto: Gregory toys with Paula in Gaslight, doing everything he can to isolate her from other people. source Gaslight trailer

Sign #3: Positive reinforcement

One of the most confusing – and effective – things a gaslighter can do is be nice to you. If someone was truly nasty and insulting towards you 100% of the time, the relationship probably wouldn’t have gotten very far. However, when someone starts gaslighting you, they’ve already established a relationship with you that you believe is meaningful.

“Naturally, the abuse persists, and you’re never sure if it happened,” Neo said. “Because the next day, he is so charming or so remorseful – or a mixture of both.”

When a relationship starts with someone abusive – often a narcissist, a sociopath, or a psychopath – they will “love-bomb” you. According to a blog post in Psychology Today by psychiatrist Dale Archer, love-bombing is a tactic when somebody showers you with affection, and makes you feel like the luckiest person in the world.

However, the love-bombing, or idealization, stage is quickly followed by the devaluation and discard stages, where you start to be insulted and wonder where on earth things started to go wrong.

The idea is that when they take this love and affection away, you will do anything within your power to try and get it back. You blame yourself for them changing the way they acted towards you, and you compromise yourself time and time again to get the perfect partner back again. You can’t though, because that person never really existed.

Gaslighters will throw in the odd compliment, or the rare gift, to make you believe that it’s the real them, and whenever they are angry at you, or abusing you, it’s because you did something wrong.

Sign #4: Projection

If the gaslighting partner is a drug addict, that’s what they will accuse you of being. If they cheat on you, they will say you are the one being unfaithful.

It’s a distraction technique, according to Sarkis, because it keeps you on your toes, and makes you feel like you should be defending yourself. You’re so busy doing this, the gaslighter gets away with whatever they want to.

Sign #5: ‘You’re crazy’

Sarkis says this is one of the most important tactics to look out for. If someone ever dismisses your point of view as “crazy,” you need to really consider why they are doing it.

It’s dismissive and patronising, and it doesn’t take your feelings into account. It makes you feel like you are not being heard. Worst of all, the more often the gaslighter calls you crazy, the more likely you are to finally believe it.

“They’ll use this ‘you’re unstable’ idea to stop you from hanging out with other people, isolating you, or making you give more of your resources over to him,” Neo said. “They’ll tell you things like ‘Look at you, no one likes you’ to dissuade you from hanging out with your friends and family, or point out how these people are bad for you.”

The desired effect: You’re under their spell

Once they’ve worn you down, the gaslighter will have you where they want you. You’ll be agreeable to everything they say and you will no longer question them when they blatantly lie to you. You’ll be confused and disoriented, and feel like you have nobody left around you to trust.

“Because you don’t trust yourself, and instead have been conditioned – rewarded or punished accordingly,” Neo said. “You fade away into a shell of who you are.”

In other words, the gaslighter now has complete control.

isolation

You might be more susceptible than others

Some people subconsciously seek out abusive people to date, time and time again. Unfortunately, this means that if you’ve been in a relationship with a gaslighter, you may be more likely to end up in another one.

Certain traits make people more susceptible to falling into these types of relationships. According to Neo, people are attracted into abusive relationships because they are familiar, and they are recreating damaging aspects of their past because familiar feelings are comfortable.

Also, there are the people who have a lot of empathy for others, and they get sucked in because gaslighters know they can prey on that.

“Some women show this co-dependency, by over-giving and over-functioning,” Neo said. “That’s a very common trait I see in my clients. They’re over-empathetic and they tend to feel a lot.”

She added: “When that happens you over-empathise with other people, and you stop empathising with yourself, because you explain everything away for other people. And the empathy starts to drag you down. You get very tired, and when you’re very tired it’s very hard to fight.”

Neo also points out that many of her clients who were in these sorts of relationships were very high achieving women. This seems counter-intuitive, but abusive people enjoy controlling those who they feel are worth controlling. For example, narcissists will show you off in front of their friends, but behind closed doors they will belittle and devalue you.

But it doesn’t stop there

If you manage to get out of the relationship, the gaslighting can persist, Neo warns.

“You find it hard to trust yourself – you let the big bad wolf into your life in the first place,” she said. “You feel like someone’s out to get you. Or, as his mask slips, he may have even told you cruelly how he was out to get you.”

However, she also says the good news is you can heal and you can learn to trust and love again, rather than feel fearful that life is out to get you at every turn. It’ll just take time.

The more aware you are of these kind of traits and signs, the better equipped you are to avoid falling into a gaslighter’s trap. It’s not an exact science – and relationships are complicated – but if you feel like you’re constantly compromising on your own sanity, or defending yourself more than seems normal, it might be time to take a step back and look at what’s really happening.

Infographic: Which Plane Seats Are Safest? | Statista

Philip Hammond keeps getting in trouble for gaffes — this time he reportedly said public sector employees are ‘overpaid’

Chancellor Philip Hammond has made his second reported gaffe after claiming that public sector workers were “overpaid”.

According to the Sunday Times, citing multiple sources, Hammond made the comment during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Ministers had been discussing the cap on public sector pay increases. Under the current structure, wages effectively only go up by a maximum of 1% each year.

Hammond reportedly argued there was no need to raise that cap.

“Public-sector workers are overpaid when you take into account pensions,” he said, according to the Sunday Times. He described train drivers as “ludicrously overpaid”.

Earlier this week, the Sun reported that Philip Hammond had made sexist comments during the same meeting.

He reportedly said driving a train was so easy that “even a woman” could do it.

Prime minister Theresa May responded with: “Chancellor, I am going to take your shovel away from you.”

The Treasury confirmed that Hammond said public sector workers receive a “10% premium” in income over private sector workers, but denied his use of the word “overpaid”. It hasn’t commented on his remark about train drivers.

The government has flip-flopped on raising the 1% cap on public sector pay. Senior Tories have publicly come out in favour of a raise in the last few weeks, with former cabinet minister Robert Halfon telling Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday: “I think we need to remove the public sector cap.”

Halfon suggested the UK could cut its foreign aid budget to fund pay rises.

The 1% pay rise cap for public sector workers has been in place since 2012 and is expected to remain until at least 2018/19.

Gaming company Atari shared some images of the new Ataribox console in a message to fans on Monday (which we saw via The Verge) as well as some details about its spec sheet.

The Ataribox has a distinctive retro look inspired by the company’s own Atari 2600, which first came out in 1977.

It features materials such as wood, which make up the console’s ribbed lines at the top, as well as glass, which is used for the front panel (there is a wood option for that too).

There are two versions: one uses the black and brown wood combination, while the other features a bright red on the front and back to match the dark top.

All Atariboxes have an SD card reader, an HDMI port, and four USB ports, as well as glowing indicator lights, but Atari isn’t sharing any more details as of yet. “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” the firm said in a statement.

“We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”

Such a magical day 😍❤️😍

A post shared by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on

Kerr posted three snaps of the private affair on her Instagram account, @mirandakerr, after they were first published as part of an interview with US Vogue.

Kerr told the magazine that she and Spiegel invited just 45 close friends and family to the intimate ceremony, which took place at the Snapchat chief’s home in Los Angeles. A canopy was hung high above the garden to ensure privacy for the couple.

There were no bridesmaids, but Kerr’s six-year-old son Flynn – whose dad is English actor Orlando Bloom – was the ring bearer and later joined the newly weds in their first dance. Flynn was dressed in a Dior three-piece suit.

Kerr’s dress was designed by Dior’s new artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri. Kerr said: “Honestly, I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful wedding dress.”

She added: “I’ve had a lot of fun with fashion, and I used to be more wild, free, bohemian. But in this period of my life, my style is more pulled back.

“My greatest sources of inspiration have always been Grace, Audrey Hepburn, and my grandmother, who at 80 has an effortless chic: a nice pant, a white blouse, a scarf, a little heel.”

Kerr told Vogue that she began her wedding day by making her husband-to-be’s favourite dish of slow-roasted chicken scented with turmeric and lemon, which the caterers then replicated for the rest of the wedding party.

The couple enjoyed an hour of yoga together ahead of the nuptials, in an attempt to calm any nerves, though Kerr confessed to the magazine that she still ended up crying through her vows.

She later changed into a short and lacy number also designed by Chiuri. The night ended with karaoke, and Kerr singing along to Shania Twain.

The UK government is going to force porn sites to introduce age-checks or be banned

LONDON – Porn sites will be forced to verify the age of their British users or they will be banned in the UK.

The Mail on Sunday and The Times are both reporting that the plans, which have been in the works since last year, will be formally announced on Monday as part of the Digital Economy Act.

Pornography sites will be forced to verify users’ ages via their credit cards to prove they are over 18, or face being banned in Britain.

The aim is to prevent children from being exposed to pornography online, which child protection charities warn can have damaging effects on their development.

In a statement (via The Independent), government minister Matt Hancock said: “We are taking the next step to put in place the legal requirement for websites with adult content to ensure it is safely behind an age-verification control.

“All this means that while we can enjoy the freedom of the web, the UK will have the most robust internet child protection measures of any country in the world.”

The Times reports that the filter is intended to be in place by April 2018, and will affect both paid-for adult websites and the free “tube” sites that currently do not require users to pay or register to access pornographic content.

It’s difficult to ban everything

There are still significant unanswered questions over how the ban would work in practice. The internet is not neatly divided into pornography and non-pornography. So while it’s technically simple to block dedicated adult websites – plenty of sites mix porn with non-pornographic content.

For example: Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter, and 4chan are all huge communities with hundreds of million users, and have no global rules against sharing legal adult content. (Twitter only bans it in “your profile image or header image.”) So it’s impossible for these companies to know what they are hosting, unless it is reported or brought to their attention – and it’d similarly be impossible for the BBFC (the British censor) to keep an accurate register of all subsections that play host to offending content.

Currently, Reddit does not carry out any unavoidable age verification checks before accessing adult content; the whole point of 4chan is that it is totally anonymous and users don’t have accounts.

It is questionable whether these sites would make significant structural changes at the behest of British authorities – risking their complete censorship in the country.

Conservative MP and former minister John Whittingdale, who introduced the bill, has since expressed concerns about its efficacy. In November 2016, he told Parliament: “One of the main ways in which young people are now exposed to pornography is through social media such as Twitter, and I do not really see that the bill will do anything to stop that happening.”

Trump’s allies have a dubious new talking point about the Steele dossier and the Russia meeting

$

Donald Trump Jr. has sought to deflect criticism of his meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower last June by saying its purpose was to collect opposition research on Hillary Clinton for his father’s campaign, and was therefore politics as usual.

Echoing his son, President Donald Trump said on Thursday that “most people would’ve taken that meeting. It’s called opposition research.”

The argument has spawned a new talking point among the president’s allies, which is that Democrats, too, worked with a foreign government to dig up dirt on Trump when they started working with the opposition research firm Fusion GPS last summer. The firm was first hired by one of Trump’s Republican primary opponents, but the funding was taken over by Democrats after Trump won the nomination.

Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele – a former British spy who founded his own opposition research firm in London – to collect information about Trump’s ties to Russia from the high-level government sources he had developed during his years working for MI6 in Moscow. The memos Steele wrote between June and November 2016 citing Kremlin officials were sent back to Fusion and compiled into a dossier that was published in full by Buzzfeed in January.

Scott Olson, a former FBI agent who spent 20 years at the bureau and specialized in counterintelligence, said he believed the Trump Jr. episode with Veselnitskaya and the Steele dossier to be “very nearly equivalent.”

“The only distinction is in who initiated: Jr. accepted an offer and the Democrats made a request,” Olson said. (Republicans made the initial request and Democrats took over later).

“But fundamentally both were interacting with Russians to gain information,” Olson said. “Those who claim the situations are different should be asked to explain how.”

Others, however, say there are some key differences between the opposition research apparently offered to the Trump campaign by the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and the research compiled by Steele on behalf of anti-Trump Republicans and Democrats.

Perhaps the most significant difference, they note, is that Steele brought his findings about potential collusion between Trump associates and Moscow to the FBI, whereas Trump Jr. and the other campaign advisers present for the meeting with Veselnitskaya did not alert authorities to an offer by a “Russian government attorney” to help defeat Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee.

“Uncovering information as Steele did (and so many other intel services!) of a Russian intelligence operation, and then reporting it to the proper authorities is not the same thing as meeting with Russian intelligence officers so as to collude in secret to support their covert action to undermine and alter the US election,” veteran CIA operative Glenn Carle said in an email.

Indeed, reports surfaced on Friday that a Russian lobbyist who has been accused of serving as a Soviet military intelligence officer also attended the meeting with Trump Jr., Veselnitskaya, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and current White House senior adviser Jared Kushner. As many as five other people were in the meeting, too, including a translator and a representative of the Agalarov family, CNN reported on Friday. Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, a family friend of the Trumps, had asked his publicist Rob Goldstone to set up the meeting.

Steele, Carle noted, “became so alarmed they immediately alerted the appropriate authorities.” The FBI reportedly did not act on the information quickly enough, so it was passed along to Republican Sen. John McCain. But McCain handed it over to the FBI, too.

Rick Tyler, a longtime Republican strategist, said on Thursday that the Steele dossier and Trump Jr.’s meeting with Veselnitskaya are “apples and oranges.”

“Getting opposition research from a qualified professional, even if it’s a foreign national, is one thing,” Tyler said. “There are lots of foreign nationals in the US and abroad who work on political campaigns. But it’s a very different thing for a government, particularly an enemy, to somehow offer opposition research as a way of saying ‘we want to help you win and someone else lose.’ That is very serious, and would essentially be allowing a foreign government to help influence an election.”

Steele, Tyler noted, was not representing a foreign government whose interests he was trying to insert into the election process. Even if Veselnitskaya was not directly connected to the Kremlin, she was presented to Trump Jr. as a “Russian government attorney” who wanted to help the campaign as part of the Russian government’s support for Trump’s candidacy.

“In my opinion, it’s a difference based on the fact that a state is volunteering information in the latter case [of Veselnitskaya],” Mark Galeotti, a Russia expert who is a senior research fellow at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, said in an email.

“The Russians supposedly used for the Steele dossier were just sources, passing on information because they were paid or otherwise induced,” Galeotti said. “But this is a case in which (also supposedly: we have nothing more than a publicist’s email claim that this was the case) the Russian government itself was intervening for, presumably, its own purposes.”

Augmented reality startup WaveOptics has raised £12 million

WaveOptics, an Oxford-based augmented reality startup, has raised £12 million in a Series B round for its display tech.

Existing backers Octopus Ventures, Touchstone Innovations, and Robert Bosch Venture Capital took part in the round. China’s Gobi Ventures also took part for the first time.

WaveOptics made headlines in 2015 as a maker of smart spectacles, but the company has changed tack to focus on the underlying display technology instead. Specifically, it’s working on giving augmented reality glasses and headsets a “wider field of view” and bright, full-colour images.

Anyone who’s tried Microsoft’s AR headset, HoloLens, will know that the field of view is limited to a small window – so if WaveOptics succeeds, it’s a big step forward for augmented reality.

WaveOptics will use its funding to expand to new markets.

Business Insider spotted that another augmented reality startup, Blippar, had been an early investor in WaveOptics.

Blippar invested an undisclosed amount in June 2015, and then again in December 2015, according to public statements. Companies House filings show Blippar and its cofounders Ambarish Mitra and Omar Tayeb as shareholders in September 2016. But the company isn’t listed among WaveOptics’ investors for the Series B round.

At the time, Blippar said WaveOptics would be developing wearables for it in future.

A WaveOptics spokeswoman said the company was working on AR display components that “will be available to go into a range of different hardware options from the first half of next year”. She wouldn’t comment on whether the company was developing wearables for Blippar.

Diego Costa just filmed himself partying in an Atletico Madrid shirt while mocking his Chelsea manager

Players often swap shirts at the end of historic football matches, but Diego Costa has taken the custom to new heights.

The striker, still contracted to Premier League club Chelsea, filmed himself partying in an Atletico Madrid shirt on Instagram Live on Sunday.

The 28-year-old was reportedly “told by message” in June that he is surplus to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s requirements.

In a message to Chelsea teammate and fellow Spaniard, Cesc Fabregas, during the Instagram broadcast, Costa said: “Give Conte a hug!

Though Costa is yet to leave the club, his video is surely proof that his loyalties now lie elsewhere. But he’ll have to wait if he wants to join Athletico.

The Spanish club is banned from registering new players after breaking rules introduced to prevent the child trafficking of youth footballers.

It could still sign the €79.5 million (£70 million)-rated Costa but the player would not be able to compete in any Atletico games until the ban is over, in January.

Costa is barred from Chelsea’s pre-season preparations as the club hopes to find the player a new club. He has been passing the time by quad biking. He has also holidayed in Lagarto, Brazil.

Bitcoin, ethereum, ripple: hard omhoog, hard omlaag

Peperplantageproject in Cambodja

Haar man verbouwt daarnaast groenten en watermeloenen.”

“We bieden gewoon marktconforme rentes. Eigenlijk heel kapitalistisch.”

We woonden vroeger in De Pijp (red, Amsterdam).

Roger Federer woke up with a ‘head-ringing’ hangover after celebrating his historic Wimbledon win until 5 a.m.

Roger Federer got so drunk after winning his 8th Wimbledon Championship title that he was almost at “break point” when he addressed the press on Monday.

The 35-year-old beat Marin Čilić in straight sets on Sunday and was up until 5 a.m. making a racket in London’s bars.

“My head’s ringing,” Federer said when he resurfaced on Monday, telling media about his night after the Champions’ dinner at Guildhall in London.

“I don’t know what I did last night. I drank too many types of drinks, I guess.

“After the ball we went to – what would you call it? I guess it’s a bar – and there were almost 30 to 40 friends that were there. We had a great time.

“[I] got to bed at 5 a.m., then woke up, and just didn’t feel good. The last hour or so I’m somewhat okay again. I’m happy with that.”

Federer’s win at Wimbledon was his 19th career slam title, four more than closest rival Rafael Nadal.

Considering the Swiss maestro won the Australia Open earlier this year he could be fancied to pick up a third slam of the year when he heads to the US Open next month.

Federer, though, is hoping the younger stars of tennis are able to challenge him and even offered his rivals advice – get more aggressive.

“I look at the stats and, whatever round it is, I see that the guy I’m going to face is playing 2% of serve and volley throughout the Championship. I’m going, okay, I know he’s not going to serve and volley – which is great for me. And the grass was playing fast this week,” he said.

“I wish that we would see more coaches, more players taking chances up at the net, because good things do happen there.”
